A Brief Look into the Career of Opera Singer Kathleen Battle

An experienced college professor, Mike Zachary, DMA, most recently led as chairman of the music department at West Coast Baptist College. Away from his career, Dr. Mike Zachary enjoys listening to artists, such as Kathleen Battle.

Battle, an American opera singer, is a five-time Grammy Award winner from Ohio. A soprano, she performs a wide range of genres, from Baroque to contemporary. Her work includes leading roles in operas composed by Richard Strauss and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. She formerly collaborated with the Metropolitan Opera, Cincinnati Symphony, and Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Noted by the Washington Post as “one of the very few most beautiful [voices] in the world,” she also has worked with renowned classical singers Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo.

Her career accomplishments include six honorary doctorates from American Universities and induction into the NAACP Image Hall of Fame in 1999. In addition, her performance during the Metropolitan Opera season opening gala in 1991, which was broadcast on PBS, garnered her an Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Individual Achievement in a Classical Program on Television.
